San Jose provides expanded summer lunch program

The city of San Jose in conjunction with the Jubilee Christian Church, the Charles and Helen Schwab Foundation and Calpine, are providing an expanded summer lunch program to young people, 2- to 18-years-old at no charge.

Councilmembers Cindy Chavez and Ken Yeager kicked off the program on June 30 at Sherman Oaks Elementary School. The program offers lunch to the students in four San Jose school districts—San Jose Unified, Alum Rock, Franklin McKinley and Campbell Union—providing for 50 percent of the students currently enrolled in the school or school district. More than 30,000 individual hot meals will be delivered to about 25 San Jose locations.

The program targets students that receive free or reduced meals during the school year. The students are served on a first-come, first-served basis. Children are welcome regardless of their social or economic status. The program is funded 100 percent by grants and foundation sponsors. Program partners include San Jose Unified, Alum Rock and Campbell Union School Districts and Safe from the Start.

For more information on the program call (800) 984-3663. Lunch locations are posted on the Web at www.sanjoseca.gov/prns.
