San Jose Stage Company presents “Beehive”, the 60’s Girl Group Musical, created by Larry Gallagher. Directed by Rick Singleton, “Beehive” celebrates the success of the breakthrough girl groups and female solo artists who carved out a niche for themselves in the early ‘60s, creating an enduring, unforgettable sound. From the Shirelles to Dusty Springfield, the Shangri-Las to Janis Joplin, Tina Turner to Aretha Franklin, “Beehive” gives these women and their music the R-E-S-P-E-C-T they deserve. Previews of “Beehive” begin at The Stage, 490 South First Street, San Jose, on May 30-31, at 7:30 pm and on June 1, at 8 pm, with a Gala Opening on June 2, at 8 pm. California Theatre Center (CTC) presents “The Woman in Black,” returning to Sunnyvale by popular demand is of one of CTC’s greatest hits! A thrilling, edge-of-your seat ghost story! California Theatre Center (CTC) presents “They're Playing Our Song”. This Broadway hit musical by Neil Simon, Marvin Hamlisch and Carol Bayer Sager is based on the real-life relationship of songwriters Hamlisch and Sager. Composer Vernon who is in need of a new lyricist, meets kooky, incurable romantic Sonia, and they dislike each other at first sight. Clearly the match is not one made in heaven! The two undergo a series of trials and overcome a number of hurdles before finding true love by the final curtain. Performances are June 7 (Preview), 8 (Opening), with various dates continuing through July 27. Matinees performances are also available. Dust off those blue suede shoes! American Musical Theater San Jose presents “All Shook Up” the national tour of the hit musical combining legendary Elvis Presley tunes with a rock and roll story. Staged at the san Jose Center for the Performing Arts, this toe-tapping tale is directed by Tony-award nominee Christopher Ashley and features Susan Anton. The lively score includes such all-time favorites as “Heartbreak Hotel,” Jailhouse Rock,” “It’s Now or Never,” and “Burning Love.” This is the final presentation of AMTSJ’s 2006-2007 season. San Jose Youth Symphony to celebrate Eastern European Tour with Bon Voyage Concert at Campbell’s Heritage Theater: This summer, the San Jose Youth Symphony (SJYS) Philharmonic Orchestra, under the artistic direction of Yair Samet, will take a selected few of the company’s elite musicians on an Eastern European Tour that will include stops in Vienna , Prague and Budapest. In celebration of this event, the Philharmonic Orchestra will perform a special Bon Voyage Concert on at the Heritage Theatre, 1 West Campbell Avenue. Selections will include Gershwin’s Strike Up The Band Overture and Rhapsody in Blue; Kenric Tam, piano, Bernstein’s Three Dance Episodes from On The Town and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4. This special one-time-only matinee concert will be at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $50 for reserved seating, $25 for 18 years and under. There will be plenty of Scottish and British food including fish and chips, bangers and shortbread… And did I hear haggis? Summer is the time for California Theatre Center’s exciting and educational Summer Theatre Conservatory Program. Based in Sunnyvale, California Theatre Center (CTC) has offered its hands-on theatre Conservatories for ages 8 and up for over twenty years. By popular demand CTC now offers 2-week-long, half-day/ morning Junior Conservatories for ages 6-8. Registrations are currently being accepted at 245-2979. CTC’s regular Summer Conservatory is a three-week-long intensive workshop for young people ages 8 and up (must turn 8 by July 1, 2007) who are interested in developing and improving theatre skills. Conservatory students will work directly under the supervision of professional CTC company members to produce and act in their own production, culminating in public performances at the end of their Conservatory session. Conservatories are held from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm five days a week at a number of locations throughout the South Bay including San Jose, Sunnyvale, Saratoga and Los Altos. Join the Master Gardeners of Santa Clara County and Friends of Guadalupe River Park & Gardens for a Container Gardening Workshop using succulents. Bring your own unusual treasures to use for containers and you’ll be inspired to learn how almost anything can be used for a container garden. There will be ready made examples to get your creative juices flowing. We’ll provide the supplies and you’ll go home with your own creation. Yoga in the Park- Friends of Guadalupe River Park & Gardens presents this gentle introduction to yoga led by instructor Kristin Strellis. This course is designed to improve your flexibility, balance and relaxation. All necessary equipment will be provided for your use. Please dress in comfortable clothing and be ready to stretch and relax. This class will be taught outside on the grass. Strength Training on the Guadalupe River Park Trail - Learn safe muscle toning and strength building exercises using fitness bands and park features. Youth Science Institute is taking registrations now for their Summer Science Camps! Designed for children ages 3 ½ to 14, there are over 35 camps to choose from. Camps include Bugology, Mighty Forest, Science Sleuths and Wild Wonders, just to name a few. Children enjoy the wonders of science and the natural world with hands-on projects, experiments, crafts, hikes and games. Camp fees range from $130 to $205 per week. Camps start the week of June 18th and run through August 17th at each of YSI’s Science and Nature Centers, located at Alum Rock Park in San Jose, Sanborn Park in Saratoga and Vasona Park in Los Gatos. History San José is recruiting volunteers and docents. Join the HSJ corps of dedicated volunteers who share the love of history and the love of a pastoral setting. Volunteers receive training of their choice of categories: school programs, historic building interpretations, archives, photography and object collections; retail store and café; gardening, special events and more. During the summer docents welcome visitors to the historic buildings at History Park weekdays as well as weekends, bringing history alive. Just in time for Summer-- a new exhibit, "A Garden of Lace" at the Sunnyvale Lace Museum. The exhibit will run May 1 through July 28. The free exhibit features lace with intricate floral designs from the 1800's forward. Flowers have been a favorite subject for needlework designers for hundreds of years. This special exhibit features lace edged dresses, shawls, collars, bonnets, doilies, table cloths and bedspreads. The Lace Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and located at 552 South Murphy Avenue in Sunnyvale, CA with free parking.
