Summer book sale scheduled for June 26

The Friends of the Willow Glen Library are sponsoring their summer book sale on Saturday, June 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Willow Glen Branch Library, located at 1157 Minnesota Avenue. Please note, this is a book sale ONLY. No baked goods will be available.

A wide selection of adult and children’s books, videos, DVDs and CDs will be offered for sale. Shop for vacation and beach reading favorites at very reasonable prices while supporting your local branch library! Sale proceeds benefit the Willow Glen Branch Library. Call (408) 998-2022 or visit www.sjlibrary.org for more information. To arrange for an accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act, please call (408) 808-2397 or (408) 808-2130 (TDY) at least 48 hours prior to the event. We’re looking forward to seeing you there!

The Friends of the Willow Glen Library greatly appreciate the donations of food received from our marvelous volunteers over the years. However, we wish to alert our generous bakers and goody providers that no food will be available for sale at this or future book sales. The bake sale portion of the book sale has been discontinued.

The San Jose Public Library’s Summer Reading Celebration, entitled “Catch a Dragon by the Tale,” kicks off on Saturday, June 19. Children of all ages are invited to sign up for this reading program at their local branch library. Each participant in the eight-week program will receive an activity log on which to track his or her reading progress.

Children win prizes at five intervals, each of which requires six completed hours of reading. Children may either read on their own or with caregivers. Participants will take home their very own dragon upon completing 30 hours of reading. Families are invited to read together or school-age children may read on their own. Participants may wish to read a little or read a lot—it’s all fun when children choose the books they want to read.

The Friends of the Willow Glen Library are pleased to sponsor several events in conjunction with the Summer Reading Celebration. Two events are planned for June. On Wednesday, June 23 from 3 to 4 p.m. Adventure Balloons will present a balloon fairy tale show with balloon puppets plus a basic balloon-puppet making demonstration.

Native American theme stories featuring nature and animals will be told and read aloud on Wednesday, June 30 from 3 to 3:30 p.m. This program is designed for children in the first through fifth grades.

Mark your calendar for July events now. There will be a “Harry Potter Quiz Show” on July 7. Lisa Atkinson, a popular area children’s singer, will host a sing-a-long on July 14, Jeremy Shafer will present a juggling/origami show on July 21 and children will decorate their own colorful book bags on July 28. All Summer Reading Celebra-tion programs are held in the youth section of the Willow Glen Branch Library on their respective Wednesdays at 3 p.m. Call (408) 998-2022 or visit www.sjlibrary.org for more information.

Don’t forget that children, their families and caregivers are invited to attend children’s regular story times at 10:30 a.m. Fridays and 7 p.m. Tuesdays. Please call Susan Eby, children’s librarian, at (408) 998-2022 or point your Web browser to http://www.sjlibrary.org/about/locations/willow_glen/storytime.htm for more information.

The alternative rock band Substance performed on the Willow Glen Library patio on May 21 to an enthusiastic crowd of about 45 young people. The Friends of the Willow Glen Library were pleased to sponsor this teen program and provide refreshments to listeners and participants in the library’s first-ever live music event.

Due to ongoing fiscal problems, the city of San Jose has proposed budget cuts to the library system as well as to other city departments. Budget cuts are still in the proposal stage. The proposed 2004-05 budget that was submitted to the city council and mayor can be viewed at www.ci.san-jose.ca.us/budget or at any San Jose public library. A public hearing on the budget will be held Monday, June 14 at 7 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers, 801 North First Street in San Jose.

Would you like to suggest a purchase for the San Jose Public Library system? Suggestion forms are available from the library’s Web site at www.sjlibrary.org/ forms/SJPL_suggest.htm or at the front desk of the Willow Glen Branch. You can either suggest a particular book, DVD, CD, or periodical, or use the comment field to make a more general suggestion about a particular topic or collection.
